Preserving Heritage, Powering the Future. Electrical Upgrade at All Saints Ryde Church

The Challenge

This was not a straightforward job and was technically complex on multiple fronts.

The existing electrical board was already full, so before the wider upgrade could happen, the church needed a new setup that could handle the increased demand. On top of that, this is a building full of character, with decorative plasterwork, stained glass, stonework and original features that could easily have been spoiled by a poor installation.

Some of the cable routes were awkward, particularly in older parts of the building where we had to work carefully to protect the finish. One of the more awkward discoveries was heating equipment that had been fitted previously but never properly wired in, so it could not be used. We made sure the client knew about that, along with other older parts of the installation that needed attention. An outside area also had to be made safe before that section of the work could continue.

Projects like this rely on judgement as much as technical ability. It is not just about getting the work done. It is about dealing with problems calmly, making good decisions as things change, and keeping standards high throughout.

The Solution

We installed a new 3-phase electrical board and upgraded supplies to support the increased load across the building, approaching the project with care, common sense and close attention to detail.

New circuits were run for heating, lighting, sound equipment, controls and general power, all designed to support the way the building is now used. Where wiring had to be visible, it was kept as neat and discreet as possible. In other areas, routes were planned through less noticeable parts of the building so the finished job felt tidy and sympathetic to the space.

Because of the building’s layout and age, cable routes had to be carefully considered, particularly at high level and through existing voids, so the installation remained as unobtrusive as possible.

Decorative fittings were used where they would be seen, helping the new work sit comfortably alongside the existing building. Heating and control equipment was set up and tested properly, so the system was not just installed, but left ready to use.

We did not ignore the wider issues that came to light during the project. Additional safety and compliance issues were identified and formally reported, even where they sat outside the agreed scope. That gave the client a clearer picture of the building as a whole and helped avoid problems being left behind for later.

The Results

The church now has a safer, more useful and more future-ready electrical setup.

It can better support day to day worship, community use, heating, lighting and sound equipment, with a system that is easier to manage and better suited to the building's current role.

For the client, the value of the project was not just in the finished installation. It was in the way the work was handled. Changes were dealt with sensibly, the finish was given proper thought, and wider issues were communicated clearly rather than left for someone else to find later.
